Let's take a virtual drive from Mexico to Canada. You will need a roadmap; a plan that shows you how many miles to drive, where to stop, and how far you have to go. The same thing applies to reaching your money goals; just like driving from Mexico to Canada, you will need a map to show your progress. Following is a chart you can print out to keep track of your steps (like cities reached on the trip) in reaching your final saving goals. Just color in the center vertical bar as your savings increase, the same way United Way does as they reach their contribution goals. Color in the center column from the bottom to the top as you meet each dollar goal set.
For example, when you save your first $1,000 you might consider you have reached Austin, so color the center bar up to the Austin level. Put in the date you hit this goal, and write $1,000 over on the right. When you save another $1,000, color the center area of the chart up to the Dallas level, put in the date you hit $2,000 and write in $2,000 on the right. And so on, and so on until your reach your ultimate goal. You might want to use $100 for each goal level, or maybe $500 or maybe $5,000. It is entirely up to you and your ability to save based upon what you have budgeted.
